Basic Information

INCLUDED: Contest Entry Fee includes overnight stay in Downtown Excelsior Springs, bathrooms, water, and trash/ash dumping. Most sites are 25’x30′. Contest Entry is $250.

ELIGIBILITY: Teams must enter the 4 main KCBS categories to be eligible for Grand and Reserve Grand Champion.

RULES: Visit the 2023 KCBS RULES & REGLUATIONS.

PASTA COMPETITION: FREE optional category. Pasta provided to teams at check-in. Turn in before 4 main KCBS Categories.

DESSERT COMPETITION: $25 optional category. Teams provide all supplies. Turn in after 4 main KCBS Categories and Turkey Smoke.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE: FREE optional category. Pork butt provided to teams at check-in. People’s Choice Sampling/Turn-In Friday Evening.

TURKEY SMOKE: Powered by the National Turkey Federation and KCBS.  Sponsored by Tyson Foods.  FREE option category.  Turkey product provided by Tyson Foods to teams at Cook’s Meeting.  Turn in after brisket.  $6,000 in cash prizes.

BACK AGAIN THIS YEAR! KIDS QUE CONTEST: $10.00 Contest Entry. Kid Cooks 5 to 15 years. Adult supervision required. Click here for application.

PAYMENT: Payment is required to secure space for contest. Limit 100 teams per competition day. Spaces WILL NOT be held without payment for contest. Ancillary contests can be paid at least 30 days prior to contest date.

PRIZE PURSE: The prize purse amount will be announced soon. In 2023, the prize purse will include payouts to the top 10 overall scores, top 10 KCBS category scores, top 5 in Turkey Smoke, top 3 scores in Dessert, Pasta and People’s Choice and top 2 scores in Bloody Mary.

Team Registration Requirement Disclaimer

Please note that all teams must register at the full price to participate in the BBQ & Fly-In on the River competition.  This requirement applies to all aspects of the competition, including any special competition categories.  Registration at full price is mandatory to ensure eligibility for competition and judging.
