What inspired you to start/open your business in Downtown Excelsior Springs?
Our youngest daughter, Brooke, was our fashion statement girl. When she died in 2007, I wanted to do something in her honor so I started writing a business plan for a women’s clothing boutique. Working full time at Evergy (formally KCPL), retiring and then going back to work for an electric contractor (Black & McDonald), I was never able to make that boutique a reality.
When Mark & Brenda Kilgore purchased 414 S. Thompson Avenue, they gave me the opportunity to lease from them, I felt the time was right to officially launch Butterfly Kisses Boutique. You might ask the significance of Butterfly Kisses…. Before Brooke passed away, many days were spent at our friends’, Bill and Donna Shenberger, pool. A few weeks before Brooke’s death, we would see brown and turquoise butterflies in and around the pool. After her death, we continued seeing these beautiful butterflies and felt that was a connection to Brooke. There have been times on her birthday or the anniversary of her death that one of these beautiful butterflies will show up to brighten my day.
Although I continue to work full time, having friends that are able to work the boutique is a tremendous help and much appreciated. I spend evenings and weekends at the boutique, and I am thoroughly enjoying the opportunity.
While building this business over the next several years, it is the goal when I finish working in corporate America to then roll over to a full-time boutique owner.
What makes your business unique?:
Catering to women of all ages, customers have the ability to shop a large selection of quality women’s clothing (Small to XXXL), accessories, purses, shoes and gifts. We offer casual and business casual clothing. We will also meet you after hours by appointment. I have partnered with Pairings and Casa Di Vite to give reciprocating 10% discounts (just show your receipt).
What are the must-try products or services you offer? And what makes them special?:
We can’t pick just one as there is something for everyone to make you feel good when you wear it.
Do you host any events, workshops, or special promotions that customers/visitors should be aware of?:
Special events are hosted throughout the year and will be posted on our Facebook page.
Aside from your own business, can you recommend another must-visit spot in Downtown Excelsior Springs?:
I recommend shopping all of the downtown businesses as each one offers a uniqueness.
How does your business engage with the Excelsior Springs community? Are there local causes or community projects that you’re passionate about or involved with?:
I am very active with the Downtown Excelsior Partnership as they are a driving force for the revitalization of our community as well as promoting all things “downtown”. I have been on the Promotional Committee for almost 12 years. I am looking forward to spring and summer while maintaining the Brooke Baxter Memorial Park, which is much enjoyed by me.
