City, DEP & Chamber Named Semifinalist for Premier Partnership Main Street Award

What does true partnership look like?

It’s not always easy. It’s not always seamless. And it certainly isn’t built overnight.

In Excelsior Springs, the relationship between the Downtown Excelsior Partnership, Inc., the City of Excelsior Springs, and the Excelsior Springs Chamber of Commerce has evolved over time, through different priorities, different perspectives, and at times, different approaches to achieving the same goal.

It hasn’t always been rainbows and sunshine.

Like many communities, these organizations have historically operated in their own lanes, occasionally intersecting, sometimes overlapping, and at times, unintentionally duplicating efforts. There were moments of misalignment, moments of friction, and moments where collaboration felt more like coordination than true partnership.

But then came an opportunity that would change everything.

When the chance arose to host the Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities (CEC) Conference, it wasn’t just a “yes.” It was a collective commitment. From the moment the idea was introduced, leaders from all three organizations leaned in, fully. Not as separate entities, but as a unified team determined to showcase Excelsior Springs on a regional stage.

What followed was something truly transformational.

Planning the conference required more than logistics. It required trust. It required shared decision-making. It required each organization to step outside of its traditional role and into a space of collaboration that was deeper, more intentional, and more transparent than ever before.

And in that process, something shifted.

Walls came down. Communication strengthened. Respect grew.

Each organization brought its strengths to the table. The City provided leadership, infrastructure, and critical resources. The Chamber contributed its business network and community connections. The Downtown Excelsior Partnership led with experience in placemaking, programming, and storytelling. Together, they created something none of them could have accomplished alone.

The result was a week that didn’t just meet expectations, it exceeded them.

From the moment attendees arrived, they were immersed in a community that was alive with energy, authenticity, and collaboration. Local entrepreneurs shared their stories. Community leaders presented innovative strategies for development and funding. Breakout sessions highlighted real-world solutions, from marketing and coworking to financing and grant writing. Attendees didn’t just learn, they experienced Excelsior Springs.

And then there was “The Taste.”

Hosted inside the historic Hall of Waters, the event transformed into a celebration of local flavor, creativity, and connection. Instead of a traditional catered experience, the planning team made a deliberate choice: involve as many local businesses as possible. The result was a curated “Taste of Excelsior Springs,” where each bite told a story and every business had a seat at the table.

It was collaboration in its purest form.

Beyond the programming and events, the conference created something even more meaningful, a platform to share the story of Excelsior Springs. Through sessions like “Beyond the Block Party: Where Events Meet Economic Impact” and “Innovative Financing Mechanisms for Downtown Development,” the partnership demonstrated how intentional collaboration can drive real results, revitalized buildings, thriving businesses, and a growing sense of place.

Attendees left inspired, not just by the ideas shared, but by the way this community worked together to bring those ideas to life.

But perhaps the most meaningful part of the conference was not just that Excelsior Springs hosted it successfully.

It was that the process changed the way the partners saw one another.

Through planning meetings, shared problem-solving, late-night details, last-minute adjustments, and moments of celebration, the three organizations developed a deeper respect for each other’s work. They saw each other’s strengths more clearly. They better understood the challenges each organization carries. They learned how much more effective they could be when they trusted one another, communicated openly, and pulled in the same direction.

The conference became a living example of what partnership should look like.

No egos. No competition for credit. No one organization trying to shine brighter than the others. Just a shared commitment to making Excelsior Springs shine.

That impact did not end when the conference closed.

The trust built through this process has carried forward. Today, the Downtown Excelsior Partnership, the City of Excelsior Springs, and the Chamber of Commerce work better together than ever before. The relationships are stronger. The communication is stronger. The willingness to collaborate is stronger. The conference gave each organization a renewed appreciation for the others and created momentum that continues to influence community projects, events, and downtown revitalization efforts.

This conference wasn’t just an event.

It was a turning point.

It proved that when organizations move beyond silos and truly collaborate, with shared purpose, open communication, and mutual respect, the impact extends far beyond a single project. It strengthens the entire community.

This is why the Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities Conference partnership deserves recognition.

Because it was not simply a joint venture on paper.

It was a turning point in practice.

It brought three organizations together to tell one community story. It helped Downtown Excelsior Springs stand proudly in the spotlight. And it proved that when local partners move beyond individual roles and step fully into shared purpose, they do more than host a successful event.

They build the kind of trust, pride, and momentum that strengthens downtown for years to come.
