Opal Wapoo Returns to Excelsior Springs in 2025 for an Epic Remastered Gravel Experience

The much-anticipated Opal Wapoo Gravel Grinder is set to make a comeback to Excelsior Springs on October 11, 2025! After a multi-year hiatus, Opal Wapoo is officially teaming up with the Downtown Excelsior Partnership, Inc. (DEP) to relaunch the gravel grinder race with fresh energy and a commitment to local trail development.
Previously a favorite among the gravel racing community, Opal Wapoo drew riders from across the region to Excelsior Springs’ scenic and challenging gravel trails. Discontinued due to logistical challenges, this beloved event’s return promises to be more thrilling than ever. With DEP’s involvement, the race will combine the event’s original spirit with enhanced organizations and fresh benefits for Excelsior Springs.
The 2025 date promises not only an exciting ride, but also a stunning scenic experience. The fall colors of early October will transform the gravel trails into a beautiful backdrop, making this an unmissable opportunity for gravel riders to experience the course at the peak of its beauty!
Event founders Phillip and Stacey Scherer, who previously orchestrated Opal Wapoo’s success, will continue to lead the gravel grinder committee. Their involvement, along with the return of many dedicated volunteers, ensures a seamless transition and an elevated experience for participants.
Beyond its impact on gravel riding, the 2025 race also holds an exciting commitment to local trail development. Moving forward, DEP will donate 50% of race profits (up to $2,000) to Urban Trail Co, supporting single-track trail construction within Excelsior Springs. This contribution will expand recreational opportunities in Excelsior Springs, providing residents and visitors with enhanced outdoor activities and encouraging active tourism.
This year’s Opal Wapoo Gravel Grinder promises to be the must-ride event of the year. Whether you’re a seasoned gravel racer or new to the sport, mark your calendar for January 1, 2025, when race registrations go live! Don’t miss the chance to be part of this extraordinary remastered race, celebrating the spirit of gravel biking, community, and a commitment to future trail development.
